Supposed political hoodlums stormed Angwan Mangu and disrupted the current re-run poll for Lafia-Obi federal constituency in Nasarawa state. The thugs, who came in three different vehicles, opened fire sporadically into the air to interrupt the exercise and probably snatch poll materials meant for the exercise, Premium Times reports.
Although the gunmen did not hit anyone, but people ran for safety to avoid stray bullets.
Meanwhile, luckless for the thugs, security agencies drafted to man the polling unit located close to the ECO bank along Jos Road, called for re-enforcement and detained them with 7 Ak47 in one of their vehicles.
Witnesses told reporters that the gunmen were arrested by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad with seven AK47 in their vehicles after shooting in the air to disrupt the election.
John Tsaku said they came in three different vehicles, opening fire in the air, frightening people during accreditation of legal electors.
He said: “The boys armed with AK47 first tried to snatch election materials but when voters on the queue resisted, they started shooting before the police, who were invited to arrest them, caught them with seven AK47 in the vehicle they parked across the road.”
Christopher Mancha, the state deputy police public relations officer, confirmed the arrests and said that five suspects were arrested by security officials in Angwan Mangu polling centre while accreditation was on going.
Mancha clarified that the thugs have been taken to the state criminal investigation department for further inquiry.
He said that the police will not take it softly with any group caught interrupting the existing peace saying and security operatives will enable the smooth conduct of the election.
“We are on ground to protect lives and property during and after the elections and whoever is found wanting will face the full wrath of the law,” Mancha said. “If those boys were found with anything incriminating that is threatening the existing peace and tranquillity of the state will be arrested without hesitation and if found guilty will be charged to court.”
It should be noted that the main electoral body in Nigeria had announced inconclusive the Lafia -Obi federal constituency polls and fixed Saturday 18 April for re-run in Chiroma ward before announcing the final result
